Hiking Safety Tips

By Nicole Roberts

Hiking is an enjoyable activity that can also be seen as a form of exercise. Those that love the outdoors and get bored at the gym may find it exciting to venture through the trails of a nearby mountain or forest. There are some hiking safety tips that should be known so that your trip will be as pleasing as possible. Read on to learn more about what you can do before and during your journey to stay safe.

Before you leave, there are several things you should do to prepare for your hike. Map your route and make a few copies. Carry on with you to help keep you from getting lost once on the path. Also, give one to someone so that they know where you are. You should also give them an estimated time on which you plan to return. Get a hiking partner if at all possible. The best of all hiking safety tips is to avoid hiking by yourself, especially in unfamiliar areas.

Water is the one of the most essential components to life. It is important that you are well hydrated before and during your hike. For proper hiking safety, be sure that you pack enough water to last you throughout the day. Start your day by drinking one or two cups of water. Avoid drinking coffee the day of your hike. Sports drinks are also not recommended, as water is the best beverage to keep a hiker from getting too thirsty.

One of the most common hiking safety tips is to make sure that you wear hiking boots when trekking through the mountains. Sneakers, sandals, and other shoes will not protect your feet as well as shoes designed specifically for hiking. You want to be sure to break them in good before you wear them in the trails. Having brand new shoes on when hiking can cause sore feet and blisters at the end of the day. Avoid borrowing hiking boots from someone else as well, as you will never know if they are broke in or too worn when getting them this way.

Check the weather forecast so that you can dress accordingly. If you are hiking in cool weather, always dress in layers. You can always take clothing off if you get too hot. Also, among the most important hiking safety tips is to wear an outer layer of clothing that is water resistant. This will prevent you from getting chilled should it start to rain. Carry a few extra articles of clothing with you, including an extra pair of socks.

Pack the most essential items for hiking safety. These include a map, compass, first aid kit, flashlight, knife with many different tools, matches, and sun screen. These items are vital if you were to get stuck in the woods overnight. Make sure your daypack is durable and will hold these items plus extra clothing properly. Being prepared is necessary for hiking safety.

As you can see, there are many hiking safety tips to follow when venturing through the mountains. You want to be sure to remain as safe as possible. Always prepare for the worst, even when it is not likely to occur.

Boating Safety and Education

By Martin Johnson

Boating safety may seem like a nuisance or too much extra hassle. After all, boating is supposed to be fun, right? Boating safety is not rocket science, and if you exercise common sense and do some planning ahead of your boating excursion, you should be able to have safe boating experience. The reality is that, generally speaking, most folk that are preparing for a day out on the water forget this and do not tend to focus on the safety issues at all.

Boating safety is tantamount to responsible boating and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Boating safety certification is a state-approved course for boaters. But it is NOT a license, it is a certification, which means that it is valid for a lifetime and can’t be taken away from you.

Alcohol or drugs played a role in 22 percent. One in five victims was operating a personal watercraft, and Miami-Dade led in the number of personal watercraft accidents, with 21. Alcohol was either a direct or indirect contributing factor in approximately one-fourth of all boating accidents, while operator errors accounted for 70%. These are devastating statistics and should serve as a wake-up call to anyone on the water, so start boating safety now. Alcohol and water don’t mix. In a Red Cross study, two-thirds of boating injury victims had consumed alcohol.

Accidents involving Personal Watercraft have almost doubled in the last few years. Accident risks multiply at busy times such as July 4th weekend, when recreational boating increases on popular lakes and rivers. The chance of being involved in an accident cannot be completely alleviated but can be reduced by using good judgment, courtesy, common sense and knowledge and obedience of boating safety laws. Accident statistics have identified items to be addressed through a combination of education, public awareness and possible manufacturing changes. Some of these items include better understanding of the operator’s responsibility by some PWC riders, especially renters and non-owner operators.

Persons accompanied in a vessel by a person exempt. A person is exempt from this requirement if there is a person on board who is not affected by this law or is at least 18 years of age and holds a boater education I.D. Persons between the ages of 12 and 16 are now prohibited from operating a personal watercraft without the direct, on-board supervision of a person over the age of 18. For boating safety, a personal watercraft is defined as a vessel less than 16 feet in length propelled by machinery, and designed to be operated by an individual sitting or kneeling on the vessel rather than sitting or kneeling inside the vessel. Personal watercraft (PWC), such as Jet Skis, must follow all boating laws in addition to specific rules. Make boating safety natural for all family members.

Anyone is eligible to take the class and receive a boating safety education completion certificate. For children under 12 years of age, the certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age. Anyone operating a motorboat, including a personal watercraft, in Colorado must be at least 16 years old. Fourteen and 15-year-olds who successfully complete a state approved boating safety course, such as the one offered by Colorado State Parks, can operate a motorboat in Colorado.

Coast Guard contains information about Federal boating laws, equipment requirements and boating safety recommendations for recreational vessels. Loaded with charts, graphics and diagrams, this brochure covers navigational rules, cold water survival and life jacket requirements to name a few. Coast Guard received reports for 4,969 boating incidents; 3,474 boaters were reported injured, and 710 died. Of people who drowned, only one in ten had a life jacket on. Coastal rivers are affected by tides. Paddling against tidal flow makes a trip difficult.

Check your local adult community school for available boating safety courses. Find a course near you by calling 1-800-336-2628.

Year Round Scouting Habits For a Successful Trophy Deer Hunting Season

By Keith Cantelmo

If you love to deer hunt, obviously the goal is to end up with a trophy deer, one that other hunters would be in awe of. To succeed, you need to develop sound scouting habits. A common mistake made by hunters is to believe that scouting begins only a month or two before actual deer season but in truth, you need to prepare for great trophy deer hunting all year round. In other words, even during off season months you should be scouting. That way, once the hunting season opens you have a huge advantage.

If you are a huge trophy deer hunting enthusiast, you have all year to learn and plan for open season. In fact, when done right you can gain tremendous insight to increase your odds of getting that trophy deer. The following are great tips for scouting deer, which could be done all year long.

  • Networking – Spend time connecting with other deer hunters, sharing information about prime locations, not just for the previous year but several years back.
  • Online Research – Spend time on any of the primary search engines such as Google.com, Lycos.com, and Yahoo.com looking for information about prime locations to consider.
  • Registration Stations – You can also visit several registration stations specific to deer hunting to gather information and ask about areas where other hunters have snagged trophy deer.
  • Private Landowners – In addition to looking up new hunting locations open to the public, identify private landowners willing to let you work the property. Remember, a large number of private landowners have no problem in letting people hunt the land but unfortunately, most hunters believe the request would automatically be turned down so they never ask. Scout areas and if you see a farmhouse attached to promising land, approach the owners and ask if you could hunt deer on their land.
  • State Fish and Game – Another great resource for information about getting a trophy deer would be through the local state fish and game department. Ask about statistics, number of deer per square mile for a specific area, permit and licensing information, etc.
  • Mapping – After identifying both public and private land, obtain maps so the next seasons hunting trip could be plotted to perfection. In addition to looking at a standard map, we strongly recommend you purchase one that shows distinct topography and even download Google Earth, which is free and provides actual satellite images of any area.
  • Bow versus Firearm – If you hunt both bow and firearm, make sure you obtain information for both seasons.
  • Hunt Clubs – Consider getting involved with several deer hunting clubs, which are comprised of other enthusiasts like you that want to learn about the best locations for trophy deer hunting.
  • Hunting Stores – Chances are you would need some new clothing and equipment for the current deer hunting season so while in stores, take advantage of any knowledge you might obtain from workers or even other customers.
  • Taxidermists – Since trophy deer are often mounted, taxidermists have access to a tremendous amount of information. Therefore, visiting this type of business would likely yield valuable information.
  • Meat Processors – You could even find several individuals or companies that process deer meat, again asking about areas where the best deer and the greatest quantity of deer are being hunted successfully.
  • Road Trip – Drive around and look for tree rows, logging roads, fields, orchards and other telltale signs of good deer hunting. Deer thrive in certain environments so any land with a water source, low valleys, and high ridges and places with tall grass where deer can bed are excellent indicators.
  • Shed Antlers – While on foot scouting potential areas to deer hunt, look for shed antlers, which are dropped by bucks in January, February and March. Then take them with you so other hunters scouting would not find this pristine spot.
  • Deer Signs – Again, once you have a few ideas as far as areas where you might get a trophy deer, spend a day walking around looking for hoof prints, droppings, beds and any type of scraping on trees or fence posts which would be done by bucks.
  • Human Distractions – Trophy deer are just that because they know how to identify when humans are near causing them to leave the area quickly. Therefore, as you scout around for land to hunt if you begin noticing anything left by humans, empty plastic bottles, food wrappings, shell casings, ATV trials, etc, start looking for a different location, one several miles away.

Hunting Black Bears Over Bait

By David Dukat

If you haven’t tried black bear hunting, these bulky black beasts will give you a thrill that’s tough to compare to a typical whitetail hunt.  There is just something about hunting a carnivore that gets your blood pumping.  The great thing about a black bear is they are spread all over the United States and Canada, are a reasonable priced hunt, and normally are not an extremely physical hunt.

In my experience, a great way to start hunting for black bears is by finding an outfitter that hunts for bears over bait.  Although you don’t have the fulfillment of back breaking hikes and spotting and stalking the animal, hunting over bait presents challenges of it’s own.

Normally the baiting begins before the season opens with sweets such as donuts, marshmallows, or any other sweet smelling tasty foods, supplemented with more fulfilling items such as dog food or meat scraps.  Many outfitters will find an available supply of reasonable priced or soon to be discarded food and begin putting it out for the bears before hunters arrive.  The bears grow accustomed to the food supply and often return year after year to the same area, sniffing around for the smell of sweets and a free meal.

The hunting is usually done from an elevated stand shadowed by the darkness of timber with an effort to keep it on the downwind side.  In my opinion, the wind isn’t a huge factor as long as the outfitter doesn’t go to great lengths to remain scent free when he is refreshing the bait.  The more human scent he leaves when refreshing the bait, the better in my opinion.  Once the bears grow used to the scent, they are not as spooked when they do catch the smell of a human near the bait.  Granted this doesn’t work very well if you begin baiting several days before hunting, but if you give the bears some time, they will grow more accustomed to the human scent.

One of the biggest difficulties is sitting in a stand hour after hour and trying to remain quiet and with very little movement.  Some people (often women more than men) have a knack for this skill, but personally this is a grueling workout for me.  To complicate matters, many times the areas where black bears flourish are thick with mosquitoes during the late spring, as well.  Even if you are covered from head to toe with mosquito proof netting, they find a spot to reach you ,or never let you rest with continual buzzing in your ear.  For me, it’s nearly impossible to remain still with these pestering bugs swarming the entire time.  Black bears are extremely weary of odd sounds or movement, so this is a necessity.  Occasionally you will hear a bear coming to stand, but many times, sight will be your first contact with a bear.  Keep still and quiet and you will have a good chance at killing a bear.  One option to slow down the mosquito swarm is a Thermacell.  They are quiet, relatively scent free and do a fairly good job of keeping the mosquitoes at bay.

The second challenge is keeping your calm.  When a bear comes into the bait it is very tempting to rush the shot.  Bears are extremely difficult to judge, but if you spend a little time, you can often tell whether it’s a male or female.  Males are blockier with a square face and often a sagging belly.  You don’t want to shoot a sow with cubs and boars are normally larger, so take the time to judge the bear.  A great reference for judging bears is watching some bear hunting videos before you go.  I recommend Cave Bears on the Pacific Rim by Jim Shockey.  There are numerous black bears taken on this video of all shapes and sizes.  Another very important factor is placing the shot in the right place.  I’ve found it’s easy to shoot a bear too far back.  Be patient and wait until the bear has his front leg angled forward toward the front of his body.  Place the shot right as you would on a deer, just behind the shoulder.  Don’t take the shot if he is in an odd position or his leg is vertical with the ground.  You may miss his vitals and have an injured bear on your hands.  They will head for deep dark cover and it’s no fun tracking an injured bear.

The main thing is to get out and have some fun.  Black bears are exciting to hunt and hopefully you’ll have a beautiful bear rug when you return.

Catch Turkey Hunting Fever

By Keith Cantelmo

For those of us who are game hunters, particularly for those who prefer a bow as their main weapon of choice, the notion of Spring turkey hunting is an exhilarating time of the year. Hunting wild turkeys using a bow takes skill and endurance. This is most likely why most hunters do not embark on this tricky journey.

As a big game hunting lover, I think of a bow hunt for wild turkey as a form of Spring training. Before you can look for a wild turkey, you have got to find them. The best way to do this is by unearthing the most common areas of the turkey’s environment. This calls for some pre-season scouting. This should be a well-known point to the hunter, especially if hunting deer is a component in your repertoire. Lets consider several of the early season scouting points.

1. Get a superior map of the area you intend to hunt.

2. Use a location call like an owl hooter or a turkey call to endeavor to get a response. When you hear a gobbler, X the location on your map.

3. Scout for the best location on foot. Examine for signs of the birds; scratches, droppings or feathers. Examine all along mud holes, creek banks, pastures, log roads, etc.

4. In no way attempt to get too close to the turkey. A turkey’s eyes, ears and awareness are many times better than yours.

5. Camouflage is a must to prevent being seen.

Wild turkeys have such incisive vision. Many hunters think that because they are not truly hunting, dressing in camo is not crucial. Why place any extra stress on these birds? You want them here and there when you do come out for the hunt.

When the Spring season is finally started and you are getting ready to head out, there are a few more items to consider as well. To begin with, make sure that you are certainly dressed to amalgamate into the background. Scores of turkey hunters usually wear a camo suit, cap, face mask, gloves and a vest with pockets to carry calls and maybe a snack.

Your movement is more important, despite of how well you are camouflaged. Camouflage does not make you totally invisible. Even though you are camouflaged, you remain an unnatural shape in the woods. Movement is definitely the enemy of the turkey hunter. A turkey can perceive you 10 times sooner than you sense the turkey.

The broad heads you use and your shot placement are essential. Unlike the vast majority of the other big game species, the wild turkeys vitals are about the measurement of a grapefruit. Scores of amateur hunters make the mistake of practicing with field points on their arrows and only change over to broad heads the day of the hunt. It is essential to practice shooting with broad heads long before the day of the hunt arrives.

Placement is vital for hunting wild turkey with a bow. That is why to be an effective bow hunter you have be dedicated and practice. All turkey hunters that use a bow have to modify their hunting plans in comparison to hunters that utilize the old-fashioned shotgun. A bow hunter has to have superlative setups and shooting lanes thought out well in advance.

For those who do desire to hunt spring turkey with a shotgun, the top shotgun and ammunition for turkey hunting is the amalgamation that delivers a dense, hard-hitting pattern at 40-45 yards. It is a good idea to practice with a target that illustrates a turkey’s vital head and neck area. This what your supposed to be shooting at with the shotgun. You should have a minimum of 8-10 pellets in this area at 40 yards.

All in all, Spring wild turkey hunting can be a outstanding venture. For those choosing to bow hunt wild turkey, this will take a lot of skill and patience. No matter what your weapon of choice, hunting turkey can bring the thrill that all hunting fans crave.

Rafting In Maine

Wild water rafting in Maine is an extreme sport enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.  Rafting is the fastest growing extreme sport in the United States.

Fortunately for us, we have some of the best rafting options in our own back yard.

Liberty General Store strives to present all its friends and neighbors with the best information available to give everyone the best chance of enjoying the “Maine Experience.”

Whitewater Rafting in Maine

By Brian J. Link

Whitewater rafting is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy. You can even share this experience with your close friends. Rafting is most commonly done on whitewater rivers and other types of rough bodies of water so that you, your family, and your friends get to feel all of the thrill and excitement that you expect. Doing this sport became considered a recreational activity in the mid 1970s. Since then, it has become more common for people to take part in this sport, and it has changed much since then.

In Maine, whitewater rafting is considered an experience that will stick with you for a very long time. This adventure, however, used to mean that you had to camp out in the wide outdoors. This made it a great experience, because there is nothing like sitting with the people you care about the most around a campfire, talking through all hours of the night. However, not everyone was interested in that particular part of the adventure. So now, in this day, you are given the choice to camp out or stay in a lodge, private home, or cabin. Although it may not seem like you are getting the whole benefit of the experience to some people, others beg to differ and will agree that the adventure is just as much fun without the camping.

Even though there are things that have changed, there is still one thing that will always remain unchanged, no matter how you decide to slice it. The thrill and excitement will always be as extreme as when it was in the 1970s when people first started rafting as a leisure sport. Your day will begin when you leave from the shuttle that takes you to the beginning of the river. Your guide will go over all of the basics of your day, and they will review anything that you will need to know about whitewater rafting, the language and commands, and of course, the safety. Then you will get into the raft where you will begin the adventure of your life. At times you will get to drift along the river while you enjoy all of the serene nature and wildlife of your surroundings. You may even be able to see a bald eagle flying above in the sky. Then all of sudden, you will come upon the rough waters of the river, and you will find yourself paddling through the rapids. You are guaranteed that you will not be thinking of any of the things that are your long to-do list at home anymore. Everyone deserves this once in a lifetime experience of the serene and peaceful moments of the river and the heart pounding excitement of the crashing rapids.

There are many whitewater outfitters in Maine that offer trips on three of the main rivers. These are the Kennebec, Penobscot, and Dead Rivers. In the Northeast, Maine is the only location that you will find that, even during the driest parts of the season, will guarantee good water levels in the rivers. This is all thanks to the daily hydropower dams. The beginning of rafting season is on May 1st and keeps going through until the middle of October. So if you are thinking of taking a trip to go whitewater rafting, do not think about it any longer. Make your trip arrangements now, and don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime thrilling experience.

How To Get Your Fly Fishing Line Ready For The Spring

By Keith Cantelmo

Most fly line manufacturers recommend cleaning of the fly line. There is no better time to do this than during the winter, just before to start of the fly fishing season. Make no mistake about it, cleaning a fly fishing line is a tedious task, but if you have ever cast your dirty line, then cleaned it and gave it another go, you would be convinced that this can improve your casting abilities.

You may be asking yourself how your line gets dirty, after all your constantly putting it in water. Any number of factors both natural and manmade can increase the friction through the guides and reduce the ability of your line to float on the water. Some of these factors include fishing in cloudy/ dirty water, prolonged exposure to heat, exposure to bug spray or sun screen just to name a few. Not to mention the fact that these factors and many more also increase the chances of a tangled line just when you need it most.

Is it possible to extend the life of your fly line? Can you avoid coil memory? The short answer is yes. Like most things, fly line will perform better, longer if you give it proper maintenance. So how can you clean your fly line and have it ready for you when you head out in the Spring? If you follow a few simple steps, you can be well prepared for the season and save yourself a bit of money for new line.

Start by soaking your fly fishing line in warm water containing a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent. Make sure not to put too much, just a little bit will create enough bubbles to loosen any debris on the line. Be careful not to tangle the line when placing it into the warm water; using your sink should provide you enough space.

Once you have soaked the line it’s time to clear any debris. Use a clean, dampened cloth. Run the line through the cloth. Again, when you do this it is important not to tangle the line; if you pull an arms length of line through the cloth at a time and let it fall to the floor by your feet, this should keep it loose enough to avoid tangling.

The next step in the process is to apply line dressing. Line dressing is basically a covering which you place on the line which provides some protection from these elements which dirty the line. This fly line dressing acts much like Armor All does for the surfaces in your car. There are several different brands available on the market. To apply the dressing, take another clean cloth soaked in the line dressing and pull the fly line through same as before.

To help you avoid coil memory, wrap the fly line in long loops, much like you would coil a cord around your hand and elbow. Then hand the line on a nail studded board and allow to dry. Keep the board away from direct sunlight and be sure to hang it in a location which is cool and dry.

Taking the time to perform proper maintenance of your equipment will ensure that it works when you need it most. Performing this “Spring cleaning” will make certain that your gear is in working order when you head out to the river.

So it should come as no surprise that having the proper ski equipment is necessary to not only enjoying the sport, but excelling at it as well.  Not to mention the fact that having improper and ill fitting equipment can increase your chances of serious injury. In an attempt to help you on your quest, we have put together a short list of the items you will need to get out on the slopes.

First are the skis and bindings.  These are essential pieces of snow skiing gear.  It’s not an exaggeration to say that there are thousands of possible ski/binding combinations available on the market today.  The staggering number of options makes it essential that you seek out qualified help when making a purchasing decision.  A well-qualified expert in a retail establishment or pro shop can make sure you end up with the gear that will protect your body while allowing you to have fun.

Next on our list is an excellent pair of boots.  Anyone who takes time to enjoy any activity in the great outdoors understands the importance of well-fitted boots. The need for these when snow skiing is no exception.  These marvels of technology will help to reduce the tremendous pressure that skiing places on your ankles.  In addition they should be designed such that they capture and retain your natural body heat so that your toes stay toasty warm.

A quality boot will include a hard outer shell for maximum protection. The buckles should offer excellent tension control for an improved fit and the liner should be replaceable so that they can be washed and replaced when they lose their effectiveness.

Last on our list are the poles.  Selecting ski poles should be the easiest gear to select of those we have discussed so far.  The amount of choices available for ski poles has no comparison to level of possible selections available when selecting your skis.  However, you should be sure to understand that they play a critical role in your overall skiing experience. They will help you to prevent falls by providing critical balance assistance.

Millions of people all around the globe believe that there is nothing better than a day on the slopes.  Having the right equipment will increase your level of fun and safety.
